Bachelors' theses prepared during academic year 2014/2015

In the course of academic year 2014/2015 there were prepared two bachelors' theses in the field of surface plasmon polaritons:

1. Plasmonic detector for rubidium atoms, author: Michał Mandrysz

The aim of this work was to create a plasmon detector with high detection sensitivity for later use in the detection of rubidium atoms in a dipole optical mirror for cold atoms. This work contains theoretical predictions, comparison of known methods of detection, description and simulation of the system that was made from scratch in the Laboratory of Cold Atoms Near Surfaces, as well as some sample results using gases – helium and nitrogen. An important characteristics of this phase detector is the size of the element, where the detection takes place – it's cross-section is comparable to the size of the laser beam and the thickness is of the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the laser beam used at the detection. The sensitivity is 8×10-8 RIU (index of refraction units) – three orders of magnitude better than for amplitude detectors.

2. Plasmonic platform for cold atoms, author: Zuzanna Orzechowska

It was measured experimentally how the thermal scattering of surface plasmon polaritons influences a adsorption and desorption of rubidium atoms from a gold layer under UHV conditions.
